BESPOKE

Louise’s Force de Vague Ring

Louise’s Force de Vague Ring

As she was expecting her third child, Louise wished a fine piece of jewellery to celebrate this cheerful event. The idea of a bespoke creation quickly became obvious. Catherine Daymard explains how Louise’s Force de Vague Ring came about.

It is a print of the japanese painter Hokusai which inspired you for this ring…

Catherine: Louise is french-japanese and her three children have blue eyes. She really wanted a centre gem as luminous as the gaze of her children. It is as I dove back into the art of the japanese painter Hokusai and his marine prints that the idea of the ring came to me. Blue eyes, the sea in movement, the wave of creation, the life-giving water … it all seemed to match Louise.

Did you have a specific design brief?

Louise: I wished for an impressive and striking centre gem! (Laughs)
And since I really like Catherine’s creations, I had the desire that she let go and gave free rein to her creativity. I was delighted that she was trying to surprise me. Not by making a “coup d’éclat”, but rather by offering me a unique creative expression, closest to my aspirations.

Catherine: I went deep into study, many ideas linked to Louise came to me: some first alive images, animations, on which Louise, living in Switzerland, commented by WhatsApp. When a personal story moves me, I appreciate this period where the imagination thrills, travels… Until the idea of the Force de Vague emerged! A gem as bright as the blue eyes of her children still remained to be found. This aquamarine was a fantastic anchor point.

Does art often inspire your creations?

Catherine: I was immersed in art. My parents were collectors, assiduously frequented art galleries and craftsmen, and I enjoyed going with them. I undertook courses for years at the Louvre Museum with greed. And I still spend a lot of time in museums or books… It is a great inspiration source, and besides my creation space is filled with objects full of memories.

What importance do you give to light?

Louise: I wanted a luminous jewel. An intense sparkle rises from this aquamarine. Catherine wanted it to be my gem. I then tested different shades of blue on my hand until I found “the one”! It was one of our greatest moments together!

Catherine: Indeed, the Wave is full of light. I asked a master-jeweller to sculpt it to convey all the vibrations of the roaring water. And the light plays through the hollows and curves of white gold. On the wave’s edge, the vivid foam shines with diamonds, which illuminate with their drops of light the fine aquamarine of an almost celestial blue!

You seem to have tied a lovely complicity…

Catherine: Creating a piece of jewellery is for me something very cheerfull. I like to imagine jewellery that will make one happy. My mother offered me jewellery for big occasions, and I will always remember her smile, the true pleasure she took to offer me jewellery. It remained part of me and it drives me on!

Louise: Catherine is a very lively and very generous woman. Her positive energy is contagious.  And the conception of this ring has been an unforgetable human exprerience. We talked a lot, learned to know eachother. And we keep in touch.

“Creating bonds” might be the definition of jewellery…

Catherine: It is even more the case for bespoke jewellery. Each custom-made creation reflects a deep and personal bond. A powerful story that links an object and the person who wears it.

Louise: … and the one who creates it!
